Nagumomo!

Suddenly, Susheela Raman has become a major part of my life. I've been spending hours with her everyday. I have fallen madly in love with 'Mamavatu' and 'Nagumomo'. I think the craze is highly contagious - Zoo is sending us loads of SR stuff, Shibs listened on in awe and wanted me to get her a copy, Deej is playing SR in his car/ipod, Harry bought and downloaded the entire album, my mom is after me for the tape!

Ok, please hold, my mom is standing here with a large shampoo bottle and is threatening to hit me with it unless I run downstairs and bring her the tape immediately. I'll be... OWWW@#!MA! (Hic! Bubbles!)

Ok, I'm back. And Gosh, I made this incredible discovery just now. A Cheb Mami- SR version of Nagumomo! This version she sings in a much more husky way - oh! so wonderful, it is! And to hear Cheb Mami sing a bit of it at the end is just something else - it's a Telugu song, man!

Life is so bloody wonderful.

* Harry, thanks for the link to the live performance at the Kennedy Center.
* Go here to listen to music from her new album Music for Crocodiles (Merci, Asha!)
And the lady sings so wonderfully in French!! *Sigh*

Hey, I must tell you how I discovered Susheela Raman - I was having dinner at Le Café Français at Pondicherry one night and they were playing a song of hers, and I was so captivated by the voice, I went and asked at the counter which cd they were playing! (Love Trap). Finally managed to get the cd at Habitat. he has a lot of world music, rare cds.

There are purists who think Raman distorts classical music and messes up the pronounciation and has no depth,(she did have lots of bad reviews) but you cannot ignore the sheer sensuality of that voice!

You must also listen to Sudha Chandra, fabulous voice, London-based South Indian, uses this mixture of Carnatic ragas with influences from all over the world. Introduced to me by my good friend who has great taste in music, Raghupathy Dixit of the Antaragni music band fame!

And wow, Cheb Mami and Raman - two voices I adore! I'd written about Mami on my blog some time ago, I love him! (A little for my God and a little for my heart!)

Keep me posted on new discoveries about these 2 people!

Yes, love it. I love the fusion of cultures... and consequently music that reflects the same. But fusion or no fusion... she does have a great voice.
And... you're most welcome.

Asha : I certainly will. And that person who played SR at the Café, I hope he/she is blessed with truckloads of happiness - just for having spread so much of it! :)
